SOUTH PACIFIC SINGLETRACK: New Zealand

New Zealand has been called the most beautiful country in the world - even the Hobbits agree! On this tour you will ride in stunning locations made famous by the Lord of the Rings movie, and enjoy spectacular ocean and mountain vistas while sampling some of the South Pacific's best singletrack. Working with local partners, we've developed this 13-day itinerary (including arrival and departure days) for passionate, adventurous mountain bikers. Includes glacier hikes, cultural activities, charming local accommodations. and an optional heli-bike!

SOUTH PACIFIC SINGLETRACK: New Zealand

For intermediate to advanced riders. On this trip we'll ride challenging singletrack trails, with long climbs and a considerable physical challenge component. Many of the trails feature technical sections and require solid bike handling skills. Day 1. Arrive Christchurch, transfer to hotel.

Pick group in Christchurch at airport. Check into hotel in Christchurch. Get bikes organized & fitted. Meet group leaders.


Day 2. Pick up, drive to Hanmer spring.

An early morning start and an 1 1/2 hr drive to Hanmer springs, Great single track in the forest and natural hot spring pools to finish the day, along with a Kiwi-style BBQ and accommodation at a very comfortable local backpackers lodge.


Day 3. Ride the Wharfedale

Early morning start - an hour drive to the beginning of the Wharfedale track: About 4 hours of great single track. After an early morning coffee we head for the hills near Oxford for the first taste of kiwi single track. This is a reasonably challenging day, of native beach forest single track. This track was originally an old stock route. Accommodation will be in a country hotel.


Day 4. Craigieburn Forest Park

Another reasonably technical single track that was originally formed to walk the rope for one of the ski areas lifts in. The trail is quite exposed and challenging but so much fun!


Day 5. Drive to Fox Glacier

A drive day with no riding. The stunning scenery of Arthurs pass and into the wilds of the West coast forest and Glaciers. Our destination is Fox glaciers at the foot of one of the most coastal and accessible glaciers in the world. In the afternoon we will be guided walk on the glacier.


Day 6. Bendigo ride

Early start and a couple of hrs in the van and back on our bikes to ride Bendigo and to start a climb to 830m, ride on an old disused gold mining water race that is quite technical and a lot of fun, to undulating and some steep descents along the Devil creek canyon to return to the edge of Lake Dunstan. Stay in Clyde where we will be for 3 nights.


Day 7. Naseby single track

We can and will spend hours playing around some of the best single track in the south, twisting and flowing under the canopy of exotic forest, earning a beer or two at the Hotel that is the hub of all the trails. Once a bustling mining town, now a town that boasts that it is 2000 feet above worry level.


Day 8. Double descent Frazers and Leaning rock

Two massive descents of 1700m each thatfs 3500m or 10200ft of down. We drive up to the tops in a 4x4. The trails are rough 4x4 farm tracks fast, rough rock gardens and fun.


Day 9. Dunstan Travers Welsh town

Back up to 1700m to Leaning rock and riding north over the barren open of the Dunstan mountains before descending to the lake far below. A short drive to Queenstown where will again stay for 4 nights.


Day 10. Roaring Meg Heli bike

Stunning eight-minute flight over the mighty Kawarau River valley up to the Pisa Conservation Area, we land at 1600m on a barren knoll with 360 degree views. This precarious pack track perched above the wild Roaring Meg River is one of the most exhilarating and technical heli bike options in New Zealand. You will encounter steep, rocky, ungroomed track before dropping to the valley floor for some great flowing single track. A real adventure ride that will test your skill and fitness | bike-hiking included. n.b. the heli-bike is optional - price depends on number of people participating (approx. $200-$300 USD per person)


Day 11. Local Queenstown single track

There is a huge range of single track and free ride options in and around Queenstown, we'll spend the day making the most of whatfs out there.


Day 12. Coronet Mountain Bike Park

We finish up our final riding day in New Zealand wit a day at super-fun Coronet Mountain Bike Park. In its third year Coronet peak ski area has opened for the summer and has a developing network of trails form full downhill trails to all-mountain XC style tracks, all chair lift accessed. We'll end our last day with a big night out on the town in Queenstown!


Day 13. Return to Christchurch

We depart Queenstown at 9 am for the 6-hour drive to Christchurch. n.b. You may also opt for a quick flight back to Christchurch if you prefer not to drive. Your accommodation in Christchurch is not included in the tour price, as you may opt to fly home this day.
